My mother is a three-time breast cancer survivor. She was tested two times and both times it came back saying it was called a variant of uncertain significance. Because of that, my physicians and genetic testing coaches said I couldn’t be tested because it wasn’t conclusive that she had a BRCA genetic mutation.
Well, I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer when I was 44 years old. And two weeks later, we learned that I carried the same variant that my mother carried. The week that we learned that myriad oncology and genetic testing reclassified the variant my mother and I as part of the BRCA 1 genetic mutation. They were the first to tell us that it had been reclassified. They were the first to help us understand that we carry that mutation.”
As a result, I’m the oldest of six and I have two deceased sisters. My living siblings were all tested and found to be negative. My one sister, who was 35 at the time, was planning at 40 to do a preventative double mastectomy because of my mother’s cancer history on the advice of her physicians. So she didn’t have to do that. And now I’ve had my sons tested. One of my sons who is my sister’s child that I’m raising is positive for the BRCA1 genetic mutation. So yes, boys can carry it too. And it can impact them as well and increase their risk for different cancers, including prostate cancer. And we now know that his mother, my sister, also carried the BRCA1 genetic mutation even after she had passed. We knew that.”
