But ultrasound also helps us better discern what is going on. Like, I recently, just this past week, had a lady come in to see me, and her nipple was kind of drawing in, and it had been happening for a couple of months.
And on the ultrasound, she had at least seven masses that, really, you could not clearly see on the mammogram, all of the masses, you could tell the tissue was distorted, the nipple was retracted. You could tell on the ultrasound something was going, or on the mammogram, something was going on.
But the ultrasound more clearly showed that this patient has multiple masses in more than one quadrant of the breast, and she ends up with a diagnosis of multicentric breast cancer.”
Dr. Stacy Smith-Foley is a seasoned physician with over 17 years of clinical experience in breast imaging. She currently serves as the Medical Director of The Breast Center at CARTI. Dr. Smith-Foley completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Central Arkansas and earned her medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. She then went on to complete her Diagnostic Radiology residency at the University of Tennessee and a fellowship in breast imaging at the University of Washington/Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.
Dr. Smith-Foley has co-authored several peer-reviewed journal articles and has participated in multiple breast imaging reader studies. She is a leader in her field, serving on the Hologic Scientific Advisory Board and advising Beekley Medical. Her work focuses on detecting and diagnosing breast cancer, offering genetic testing, and providing supplemental screening for women with dense breasts and high-risk screening with MRI.

There are several ways to diagnose breast cancer, including mammograms, biopsies, and ultrasounds. Once breast cancer is diagnosed, there are a few treatment options available, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. The best way to treat breast cancer is to catch it early and to get the best treatment possible.
There is a strong community of women who have been affected by breast cancer. In addition, there are a number of organizations and resources available to help women find the support they need.
