So I would say that biology trumps most other things that we can do clinically. The biology of the patient’s own cancer determines a lot of their clinical outcomes. And the more we understand about that biology, the better we can treat that patient and that’s what we call personalized medicine.
So one way in which we can do that is we can see from tumor specimens from patients that have had clinical trials in the past, we can go back and look at those tumor specimens and see, hey, which patients did well and are there specific things about that patient’s tumors, specific genes that those tumors express that can help us predict whether a patient has a specific amount of risk in tumor recurrence in local control and maintaining that local control.
And tests like Decision RT from Prelude DX do an excellent job of determining that and help clinicians along with other factors to have a very good conversation with a patient about whether to recommend radiation or not.”
Dr. Ramji Rajendran has worked at AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Medical Center Cancer Institute for 11 years treating women with breast cancer and the Illinois Gamma Knife Center providing treatment for breast cancer patients with brain metastases. This year it has also become personal as my mom underwent successful treatment for a breast cancer recurrence. We will feature stories of women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and share their journeys.
There are several ways to diagnose breast cancer, including mammograms, biopsies, and ultrasounds. Once breast cancer is diagnosed, there are a few treatment options available, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. The best way to treat breast cancer is to catch it early and to get the best treatment possible.
There is a strong community of women who have been affected by breast cancer. In addition, there are a number of organizations and resources available to help women find the support they need.
