https://learnlooklocate.com/radiation-education/ 🌞 Ramji Rajendran MD PhD: “So, radiation is a type of energy that is carefully delivered exactly where it needs to go in a person’s body to allow them to have damage to the DNA of the tumor cells. And the tumor cells don’t do a good job of repairing that damage, so they die, whereas normal tissues do a good job of repairing their own DNA damage, and therefore we’re able to treat the tumor cells and kill them while still
maintaining normal tissues.
Specifically for breast cancer, radiation is primarily used for adjuvant treatment. That’s a difficult concept for even me to wrap my head around. Adjuvant treatment is kind of like buying an insurance policy. If we have a thousand patients that we treat, and often large randomized clinical trials and radiation oncology do have thousands of patients, if we have thousands of patients which we treat, we can see that patients that have radiation have a decreased chance of their cancers coming back.
So these trials, which have been done since the 70s have allowed women to have breast conservation. And that is the main benefit to radiation is breast conservation. The second benefit to radiation is maintenance of local control. Well, what does that mean? Well, that means that if a patient has all of their cancer removed by the surgeon, we can ensure that that cancer has the lowest possible chance of coming back so we can decrease the risk of those cancer cells coming back and forming tumors.”
Dr. Ramji Rajendran has worked at AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Medical Center Cancer Institute for 11 years treating women with breast cancer and the Illinois Gamma Knife Center providing treatment for breast cancer patients with brain metastases. This year it has also become personal as my mom underwent successful treatment for a breast cancer recurrence. There are several ways to diagnose breast cancer, including mammograms, biopsies, and ultrasounds. Once breast cancer is diagnosed, there are a few treatment options available, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. The best way to treat breast cancer is to catch it early and to get the best treatment possible.
There is a strong community of women who have been affected by breast cancer. In addition, there are a number of organizations and resources available to help women find the support they need.
