I think that we generally tend to treat patients that really need it, meaning the best dose of radiation to receive is no radiation because then you don’t have any side effects. We prefer to give no radiation to patients that are not in great health, maybe would not be able to tolerate having radiation treatment. And I think that knowing when to not treat patients is just as important as knowing when to treat patients.
I think we’ve also done a good job in treatment of partial breast or just treating part of the breast for patients that have a low risk of recurrence in general. So the favorable patients tend to have less whole breast radiation. Sometimes they receive partial breast radiation treatment. Other advances include the ability to treat with fewer fractions. We are now currently treating with hypo-fractionated whole breast radiation, which is treatment, which used to be 33 treatments are now done within 20 treatments safely. And we’re looking into maybe even as few as five fractions, although that is still under investigation and being explored as a clinical trial.”
Dr. Ramji Rajendran has worked at AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Medical Center Cancer Institute for 11 years treating women with breast cancer and the Illinois Gamma Knife Center providing treatment for breast cancer patients with brain metastases. This year it has also become personal as my mom underwent successful treatment for a breast cancer recurrence. We will feature stories of women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and share their journeys.
There are several ways to diagnose breast cancer, including mammograms, biopsies, and ultrasounds. Once breast cancer is diagnosed, there are a few treatment options available, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. The best way to treat breast cancer is to catch it early and to get the best treatment possible.
There is a strong community of women who have been affected by breast cancer. In addition, there are a number of organizations and resources available to help women find the support they need.
