A lot of people will go in with the inflammation changes, meaning redness of the breast, maybe skin thickening. You can start to see almost like an orange peel like appearance to the skin or the nipple and there may or may not be a mask. So it can be quite insidious and very under the radar, especially in young women.”
“And it can be written off as this could be lactational mastitis if you had just had a baby or a breast abscess. And usually, people are given antibiotics for a little while. And then if it forms a mass or it does not get better, then they’re typically sent to have a biopsy. But any sort of changes in the breast tissue where you see redness, skin changes, orange peel-like appearance, Obviously a mass or anything in the armpit region should prompt diagnostic imaging and biopsy.”
Allison DiPasquale, MD, is a Breast Surgical Oncologist at Texas Oncology. She is dedicated to the treatment and cure of breast cancer, benign breast diseases and high-risk genetic patients. She decided at an early age to dedicate her career to those affected with breast cancer. Dr. DiPasquale strives to progress the field of breast cancer surgery and push the needle forward in terms of Surgical technique and innovation.
Katrina is in the process of writing a book that narrates her journey with breast cancer. Unlike traditional memoirs on the subject, she aims to present her story in a novelistic format, giving cancer and her brain their own characters.
