And even the smallest percentage is of, uh, breast cancers diagnosed or in those women who have a genetic predisposition. So family history is very important. If you have family history, you may need a higher level of screening or some supplemental screening.
But all women need to be getting a mammogram. Little saying is that if you have breasts and you have birthdays, you’re at risk, and you need to be getting your mammogram starting at age 40. If you don’t have any family history and getting your mammogram each year. No, every other year, no stopping at age 75. As long as you are relatively healthy and you have at least a five year survival rate, there’s really no age at which I would recommend that you stop having your mammogram.”
Dr. Stacy Smith-Foley is a seasoned physician with over 17 years of clinical experience in breast imaging. She currently serves as the Medical Director of The Breast Center at CARTI. Dr. Smith-Foley completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Central Arkansas and earned her medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. She then went on to complete her Diagnostic Radiology residency at the University of Tennessee and a fellowship in breast imaging at the University of Washington/Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.
Dr. Smith-Foley has co-authored several peer-reviewed journal articles and has participated in multiple breast imaging reader studies. She is a leader in her field, serving on the Hologic Scientific Advisory Board and advising Beekley Medical. Her work focuses on detecting and diagnosing breast cancer, offering genetic testing, and providing supplemental screening for women with dense breasts and high-risk screening with MRI.

There are several ways to diagnose breast cancer, including mammograms, biopsies, and ultrasounds. Once breast cancer is diagnosed, there are a few treatment options available, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. The best way to treat breast cancer is to catch it early and to get the best treatment possible.
There is a strong community of women who have been affected by breast cancer. In addition, there are a number of organizations and resources available to help women find the support they need.
