And so I think from the prevention side, you know, there are some really great and exciting trials going on right now, looking at vaccines to prevent more aggressive types of breast cancer, like triple negative and HER2 positive. And that is amazing to think that we may have some data from that and the not too distant future. I mean, that would be incredible. And in terms of early detection, that idea that, you know, hopefully we won’t need at least mastectomies, you know, because we’ll be able to tailor our breast cancer treatment and make it much smaller because we’re diagnosing breast cancer much earlier.
And I think the idea of liquid biopsies, you know, following people on a regular basis to see when are they having cancer come back, if they’ve already had cancer, but to, you know, is this someone that now has some circulating tumor cells that may tell us, okay, we haven’t seen a cancer show up on imaging yet, but maybe it’s there. And then combining with the better and better imaging techniques we get and AI, like you mentioned, I mean, I think we’re going to get to a stage where we are finding breast cancers really early, where we are preventing them. And again, hopefully really just continue to scale back on more aggressive treatments that we need to treat breast cancer.”
Dr. Peled is a practicing breast cancer and plastic surgeon based in San Francisco. She is board-certified in plastic surgery and has fellowship training in breast surgical oncology, making her uniquely able to offer both breast oncologic and reconstructive surgical care. She is the co-director of the Breast Care Center of Excellence at Sutter Health California Pacific Medical Center. She has an extensive research experience focused on improving outcomes after breast cancer surgery and breast reconstruction and is currently involved in research looking at novel approaches to optimize patient satisfaction and quality-of-life after breast surgery.
Dr. Peled has a passion for educating patients and health care professionals about oncoplastic surgery and breast reconstruction options, regularly teaching at courses across the U.S. to increase awareness around these approaches. She is a breast cancer survivor herself and shares her story to inspire others to advocate for themselves to achieve their best health outcomes.
We advocate the importance of self-breast exams, what to look for when performing a self-exam, and when to see a doctor. We provide resources for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, as well as for their families and friends.
The five-year survival rate for women who catch their cancer early is nearly 100%. Here’s an important statistic. Many women do not perform self-breast exams or see a doctor for regular screenings. There are several ways to diagnose breast cancer, including mammograms, biopsies, and ultrasounds. Once breast cancer is diagnosed, there are a few treatment options available, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. The best way to treat breast cancer is to catch it early and to get the best treatment possible.
There is a strong community of women who have been affected by breast cancer. In addition, there are a number of organizations and resources available to help women find the support they need.
