Unbreakable at 31: Aleah’s 10-Year Journey Through Breast Cancer, Fertility, and Finding Purpose
Meet Aleah
Aleah’s story is a testament to the strength and resilience of young women facing breast cancer. Diagnosed at just 31 years old with no family history, she discovered a “firm spot” in her breast that would soon change her life. Ten years later, she’s not only a survivor—she’s a passionate advocate for other young women navigating the complexities of breast cancer.
A Firm Spot That Changed Everything
“You could have knocked me over with a feather.” That’s how Aleah describes the moment she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. At the time, she was healthy, young, and had no family history of the disease. But while adjusting her sports bra, she noticed something—a lump she later described to her doctor as a “firm spot.”
Her doctor suggested she wait until her next cycle to see if it went away. But Aleah trusted her instincts and returned for a follow-up. That decision may have saved her life. After a mammogram, ultrasound, and biopsy, she was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.
A Fast-Moving Diagnosis: ER+, PR-, HER2+ and Stage 3A
The diagnosis came fast—and the plan had to move just as quickly. Her tumor was large, and lumpectomy wasn’t an option. Aleah chose a single mastectomy without reconstruction, hoping to preserve the other breast for potential breastfeeding in the future.
Her full diagnosis was Stage 3A ER+ (Estrogen Receptor Positive), PR- (Progesterone Receptor Negative), and HER2+, with three positive lymph nodes. After surgery, she did fertility preservation, then started chemotherapy (AC-T), followed by a year of Herceptin and Perjeta.
Due to close surgical margins, Aleah also underwent radiation therapy, then started ovarian suppression and aromatase inhibitors. Her oncologist originally recommended 5 years—but that turned into 7, and then 10. Aleah stayed on therapy for over 9 years before, with her doctor’s support, deciding to stop.
10 Years Out: Living, Loving, and Advocating
Now, Aleah is 10 years out from diagnosis—and off cancer meds for the first time in a decade. She’s gotten married, changed careers, and embraced a new phase of life. But the emotional impact of her diagnosis still echoes.
“I remember thinking for years that I might not make it to 40. Let me tell you—my 40th birthday was such a fantastic milestone!”
Aleah has turned her experience into action, advocating for young women with breast cancer and speaking out about fertility, long-term side effects, and the mental toll of survivorship. Her mission is clear: “I want to leave things better than I found them.”
