Breast Cancer Survivor Story, Richa’s Journey

Richa’s Journey: From Diagnosis to Victory Over Breast Cancer

When a Routine Checkup Becomes a Life-Changing Moment

“I was only 36. No family history. No warning signs.”
That’s how Richa’s journey began—what was supposed to be a simple visit to refill her thyroid medication turned into something she never expected. Her OBGYN insisted on an in-person checkup, and during her breast exam, a lump was found. Because of her dense breast tissue, Richa was sent for an ultrasound instead of a mammogram—a decision that changed everything.

The Diagnosis: Invasive Ductal Carcinoma

She was diagnosed with Stage 1 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC) in her right breast. The news came after a weekend of waiting following a biopsy, and it shook her world. With no family history of breast cancer and no visible symptoms, the diagnosis was a complete shock.

Thankfully, a close family friend, Dr. Ramji Rajendran, a radiation oncologist and trusted Learn Look Locate Medical Advisor, stepped in to help. He guided her to a treatment team including breast surgeon Dr. Mary Ahn and oncologist Dr. Steven Kanter.

Her treatment plan included:

  • 4 rounds of chemotherapy (originally planned for 6)

  • Lumpectomy

  • 35 sessions of radiation over 7 weeks

Chemotherapy: The Hardest Part

Her first chemo session began just two weeks after her diagnosis. The treatment worked quickly—but the side effects were intense. Richa battled:

  • Painful mouth-to-stomach sores

  • Full-body aches and fatigue

  • Persistent cough and lung infections

  • Severe skin rash

  • Appetite loss

  • Sleepless nights

  • Hair loss—especially heartbreaking for her children

After four rounds of chemotherapy, her doctors decided to stop due to suspected allergic reactions. Thankfully, the tumor had nearly vanished.

Surgery and Radiation: The Road to Recovery

On February 12, Richa had a lumpectomy and returned home the same day. Four weeks later, she began radiation therapy—35 sessions over 7 weeks. By the end of April, she completed her treatment, and a follow-up MRI confirmed the best possible news: cancer-free.

She continued maintenance medication every three weeks through the end of the year and has remained diligent about follow-up care.

One Year Later: Grateful and Strong

By October 2016, just one year after her diagnosis, Richa had completed all treatments. Now cancer-free, she reflects with gratitude on everyone who supported her during the most challenging time of her life.

“NEVER take your health for granted. Advocate for yourself. Dense breasts matter. Know your body.”
