Healing Hands: Dr. Anne Peled’s Journey as a Breast Cancer Surgeon and Survivor

As a breast cancer survivor and a breast cancer reconstruction surgeon in San Francisco, my mission is to empower others with knowledge, advocate for better surgical options, and innovate in patient care.

A Diagnosis that Changed Everything

I was diagnosed with Stage I breast cancer in 2017, a turning point that not only shaped my personal life but also deepened my commitment to the field of breast surgery. My experience has fueled my passion for advocating for better options and educating people on both the oncologic outcomes of breast cancer treatments and the potential long-term physical and psychological effects. It’s crucial that people understand the whole picture, not just the cancer-fighting benefits but also the impact on one’s quality of life after treatment.

Pioneering a New Path

After going through breast cancer treatment myself, I knew there had to be a better way to help others facing similar challenges. My husband, Dr. Ziv Peled, a peripheral nerve surgeon, and I decided to collaborate and pioneer a new technique that could preserve sensation after mastectomy, minimizing or even eliminating the chest numbness that often follows the surgery. I understand firsthand how important it is to feel like yourself again after treatment, and I want my patients to not only survive but thrive, reclaiming their sense of self in every way possible.

The Rewarding Impact of Innovation

The most rewarding part of my practice is seeing breast cancer survivors emerge from surgery not only healthy but also able to look and feel like themselves again. Nerve-sparing mastectomies and oncoplastic surgeries have the power to help restore a patient’s sense of normalcy, and that is what drives me to continue innovating. I hope to keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in breast surgery—because every patient deserves the chance to heal, in every sense of the word.
