Daniela’s Breast Cancer Journey: Stage 1 HER2-Positive Breast Cancer

New Beginnings and Unexpected Diagnosis

It was September 2022, and I was 37 years old. My family and I had just moved to New Jersey from New York—my husband, our 4-year-old son, and our 8- and 9-year-old daughters. It was an exciting time, filled with the promise of a new house, a new neighborhood, and a fresh start for all of us.

From Routine Mammogram to HER2-Positive Diagnosis

During this time of transition, I was due for my annual gynecologist visit. Since I was in a new state, I went to see a new gynecologist in New Jersey. Given my strong family history of breast cancer, the doctor sent me for my first mammogram. That’s when they discovered a tumor.

Initially, the biopsy results indicated stage 1 breast cancer, HER2-negative. Given the diagnosis, I chose to have a unilateral mastectomy with reconstruction. However, the pathology from the surgery showed that I was HER2-equivocal, which meant further testing was needed. After a FISH test, it was confirmed that there was some HER2 positivity. The tumor was grade 3, and I had micrometastasis to the sentinel lymph node.

Comprehensive Treatment for Early-Stage HER2-Positive Breast Cancer

Given all of these factors and my age, I underwent 4 rounds of chemotherapy, followed by a year of Herceptin treatments. I also had 25 rounds of radiation therapy. After completing these treatments, I made the decision to undergo a right prophylactic mastectomy to reduce the risk of recurrence.

Currently, I am receiving monthly Lupron injections and taking Tamoxifen. I’m also on Verzenio, as my oncologist wanted to ensure we targeted all cancer cells, given that my cancer had more HER2-negative characteristics than positive.

Life After Early-Stage Breast Cancer Treatment

Today, I find joy in the simpler things—appreciating my children’s crazy sports schedules and all that life has to offer. This journey has been incredibly difficult, with many hard days, but I am deeply grateful for the advancements in treatments and the opportunity to watch my children grow.
