Christine Handy: Breast Cancer Survivor and Learn Look Locate Ambassador
A Life-Changing Diagnosis
In 2012, at the age of 41, Christine Handy‘s life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. Despite having no family history of the disease and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, Christine found herself facing a battle she never anticipated. Her treatment journey was intense, including 28 rounds of chemotherapy over 15 months, followed by a double mastectomy and multiple reconstructive surgeries.
Overcoming Physical and Emotional Challenges
The physical toll of cancer treatment was significant, with Christine experiencing a range of side effects from chemotherapy, including heart issues, liver spots, and teeth extractions. However, it was the emotional trauma that left the most profound impact on her life. “For me, the emotional trauma was greater than the physical,” Christine shares. “In many ways, my life is better now. My perspective has changed.”
A Journey of Self-Discovery
Through faith, self-reflection, and the unwavering support of her loved ones, Christine embarked on a transformative journey of self-discovery and purpose. She found strength in her lowest moments, choosing to view her diagnosis as a catalyst for change and growth. This shift in perspective led Christine to channel her experiences into making a positive impact on the lives of others.
From Survivor to Advocate
As she navigated her recovery, Christine became determined to thrive, not just survive. She took on the role of advocate for breast cancer patients and survivors, serving on the boards of several non-profit organizations, including The Wonder Women Initiative, People of Purpose, and the Break Free Foundation. By sharing her story, Christine aims to offer hope and support to those navigating their own cancer journeys.
Using Her Voice for Change
Christine’s advocacy work extends far beyond her immediate circle. She uses her platform to raise awareness about the importance of self-esteem, self-advocacy, and emotional well-being during and after cancer treatment. “I have a voice, and I’m going to use it,” she declares, emphasizing the power of sharing one’s story to inspire and empower others.
